You must manually set the servers and port numbers with the supported AOL Mail information in order to send and receive AOL email with a third-party email client. You don’t need to modify your settings if you use the AOL app or mail.aol.com to access AOL Mail.
Your emails are accessible using POP3 on a particular machine with reliability. But by default, it doesn’t sync between devices or store up your communications.
IMAP allows you to read and interact with your emails from any device while securely storing them on the server. It’s practical to access email on several devices.
